TPT’s Information Management Systems strategy and roadmap have been revisited to align with the MDS and to incorporate the results from the organisational health and stakeholder perception surveys conducted in 2012. Focus areas include:
Governance and risk management - with particular focus on improved information security and protection of information assets.
Innovation and optimisation - to introduce new technology into the organisation to improve customer satisfaction and operational performance as well as to ensure that existing investments in systems and technology are utilised fully while catering for expansion and growth into the future.
Customer focus - to ensure that the projects and initiatives that are undertaken are aimed at delighting the customer. This includes improvements in system performance and support
Knowledge sharing - to provide platforms for both internal and external parties to collaborate and share information and knowledge.
Collaboration and integration of systems across supply chain boundaries, i.e. the implementation of Navis Sparks N4 into City Deep and other Transnet Freight Rail container terminals will provide visibility and aims to improve performance and simplify the movement of containers and other cargo between divisions. Other key projects include the redevelopment of the General Cargo Operating System (GCOS) to a full multi-language, multi-commodity system that can be deployed internally as well as sold to other African terminals to support the Africa strategy. Information Technology initiatives to support the MDS are underpinned by:
Key technologies at Transnet Port Terminals include:

The terminal had undergone a complete revamp and was the first terminal to operate using Rubber Tyre Gantries (RTG’s). The Navis system was the market leader in container terminal operational systems with more than 250 sites in 50 countries at the time.
