TPT has consecutively met all corporate targets in terms of Disabling Injury Frequency Rates (DIFR) for the past three financial years, reducing our incidents impact further from 0.80 to 0.45 which is a 43% reduction year-on-year. The acceptable DIFR safety norm is any number that is below 1. We aim to continue along this path of making TPT safe and operationally efficient for the benefits of our clients and all our stakeholders.
This is a further indication of management’s willingness and commitment to the safety programme and creation of a safety culture.
Safety Culture Programmes (Transnet Golden and Premier Safety Leagues)
Transnet Port Terminals has also instilled a Safety Culture programme to embrace a ‘zero tolerance” approach to substandard behaviour in the work environment. The Safety Culture programme takes the form of a soccer league with competing teams/sites to instil a safety culture that focuses on the drivers for positive safety behaviour. These measures include the following:
Safety meeting attendance
Safety symposium attendance
Safety training attendance
Number of planned job observations
Safety communication effectiveness
Personal Protective Equipment worn
Number of near-misses
Good safety practice slips - issued by EXCO members when visiting terminals
(This encourages EXCO to be on the floor all times)
Number of safety incidents – disabling injuries
Breathalyser testing and follow through sessions
Employee Assistance Program (EAP) referrals
Unplanned leave
Absenteeism
Property damage costs
Fatalities
