In order to provide efficient loading, unloading, transhipment, temporary storage and terminal services to our customers, Transnet Port Terminals safety objectives are characterised by the promotion of value-driven behaviour and proactive leadership. We have transformed safety management into a dynamic risk-based model that integrates safety and operations for progressive behaviours across our terminals.
Areas that remain a safety challenge within our environment include equipment accidents, fires and incidents involving third party contractors. However, three key performance indicators are monitored closely:
All identified safety hazards are evaluated, prioritised, treated and monitored using a hierarchy of controls which makes provision for:
Complete elimination and eradication of hazards
Replacement of materials used or a process with less hazardous ones
Engineering modification and redesign of equipment or work processes to minimise human exposure
Isolation or complete enclosure of hazards through adequate guarding
Controls such as training, administration breaks, leave and procedures
Properly designed personal protective equipment (PPE) where other controls are not practical.
